NYPD officers can make 6 figures salary after 5.5 years plus huge perks.

I was talking to my buddy Matt last night and found out that an NYPD officer can make 6 figures plus perks, and work towards a nice pension plan after 20 years. Starting salary is roughly 43k, while an officer with 5.5 years under their belt gets 91k. With overtime, that definitely puts them on a 6 figure salary. The best part is, they only have 14.5 more years before they get a pension plan that covers half their salary. So let’s say they get 140k salary by that time, they would get a pension plan that covers 70k annually for the rest of their life. They can take on another job, and have two sources of income. So imagine if you were 20 years old, got 70k annually from your pension plan when you’re 40, and get another job… that’s a phenomenal deal. That’s the tax payers dollars at work! And that is why my buddy Matt is applying to the academy. He’ll take a pay cut to start off, but in the long run, he’ll make more.

In addition, NYPD officers get additional perks and benefits…
• 27 paid vacation days after 5 years of service
• Unlimited sick leave with full pay
• A choice of paid medical programs (this covers dependencies as well)
• Prescription, dental and eyeglass coverage (this covers dependencies as well)
• Optional retirement at one half salary after 20 years of service
• Annual $12k variable supplement fund (upon retirement)
• Annual banking of $12k variable supplement fund after 20 years of service (if not retiring)
• Excellent promotional opportunities
• Educational opportunities
• Additional benefits are available to military personnel (like owning fully automatic firearms)

But wait, that’s not just it… there are other secret perks to being a cop…
• Nobody will mess with you, since you’re a cop.
• You’ll never get a speeding ticket ever again.
• You’ll get free lunches (since people want you to check on their store/restaurants).
• Women love cops.

  1. It's a hidden secret in the city. The pay is rough at the beginning but top pay, with minimal overtime brings in an easy six figures. Not to mention the "unmentioned" perks which including a parking placard. My husband has been with the department for sometime now and he made lieutenant in under 10 years. He beings in close to 130k with hardly any overtime. He's on the list to be promoted to Captain and after a few years in rank will bring in about 165k. The media loved to discuss how severely underpaid rookies are without looking at the big picture. He will also be retired at 44 (if he doesn't stay longer) and by then will bring in a 50%, federal taxed only (no state, local, SS or medicare) yearly pension of around %80k…to do nothing! It has it's flaws, but the NYPD is a great job after you've paid your dues for the first several years. God bless.

  2. So if it’s such a great job why not so many people want it?! How about not spending holidays with your family? Working odd hours and sometimes without days off? How about having to fight people who just committed a crime? Oh what about putting your hands on people with tuberculosis, hepatitis, aids, drug addicts with needles in their pockets? Or what about the risk of stopping someone not knowing if they have a gun or a knife? Oh maybe Officer Figosky knew a thing or two about that. Perhaps pfficer Timoshenko or the officers who died during 911? Yeah, they sure did it for the money and perks! That’s the same reason why everybody wants to be a cop in NYC. Right?!

    • See the thing is that they receive all these benefits, but inorder to get higher ranks for benefits u have goals to achieve. For instance, # of arrests, # of tickets and etc. if you closely think about it you pretty much have to be an aggressive or apathetic person. All those unreasonable tickets police officers give to those who really don’t deserve it is b/c they need their goals done to get promoted not b/c they want to be d*cks.

      • Promotions are all test based. There is no quota although you should bring something back every now and then so it doesn’t seem like you’re just hiding out all day and scamming. For example i bring in about 5 parking tickets, 5 moving summonses, and 5 criminal summonses a month. That’s 15 total which doesn’t even mean 1 per day. In a big city it’s pretty hard to spend 8.5 hours a day and not find someone who deserves it. I have never been spoken to about “not bringing in enough” at this pace, and according to patrol guide, there is no quota so even if they spoke to me that my activity is low, there’s no disciplinary action they can take.

I think you may be confused with traffic agents who dress like us and have cars and equipment with NYPD written on them. They do have a quota and depending on what neighborhood, they have to get sometimes up to 35 tickets a day. They wear our uniform except with white hats and they do not have weapons. Their purpose is to walk around all day looking for tickets, they are NOT NYPD but sometime in the past they began having them wear our uniform because people assaulted traffic agents who were doing their job writing tickets. They are indeed aggressive as you say at giving tickets and very apathetic towards whoever they ticket so they can meet their quota. I hope this shed some light, I’m not defending all the NYPD’s actions but it’s not all as bad as is reported to be. Only bad police news gets reported and is often construed to make it look as bad as possible. Cheers.

  3. 23 years as a cop if I got out tomorrow 78k a year plus medical I’m 44. But what do I know I’m just a cop. Haha thanks nyc . I may stick around for 2 more years pension should be low 90s since I still contribute to the pension even though after 20 you are not required to do so

  4. To the fool who said Traffic Agents Rent NYPD personnel…Think again they have NYPD ID are hiredoing and trained by the NYPD and get penalized just like a cop for any infraction…They may not be Police Officers but they are NYPD employees…

  5. The USA Soldiers should be making that much not police officers who do nothing. US Soldiers lose their lives daily protecting our country. Police officers should be paid nothing above 40000. They do nothing and have a disgusting attitude I want to record some NYC officers I am going to send a letter to trump about their disgusting behavior so he can fix them good. And their highest level of education required is an associates pathetic idiots.
