I knew most of these, but I really liked #7, #9 and #11.

7. 37signals doesn’t have a marketing person or marketing strategy. Anyone can tweet or publish blog posts without going through editors or an approval process.

9. If one job candidate is slightly better than another in their core skill but a worse writer, 37signals hires the better writer.

11. 37signals employees aren’t offered equity or stock. “I don’t believe in paper money – well, I believe in 5s, 10s, 20s, 50s, 100s – but I don’t believe in certificates,” said Fried. “I don’t believe in future payment possibly if you hit the lottery.”

Management vs. Leadership

The manager does things right; the leader does the right thing. The manager relies on control; the leader inspires trust. The manager focuses on systems and structure; the leader focuses on people.

These are just a couple of examples of the differences between management and leadership. My dad and I were talking about this topic over the weekend and made a great point about how small companies need strong leaders. They can align teams around a vision and inspire everyone to get the right thing done.

The best kinds of people to manage are the ones that don’t need any management. Encourage leadership and empower the people doing the work.

Here’s another good article related to management vs leadership.

I’m really loving some of the design elements in this office. The only thing I’d be worried about is noise. Working in an open environment with wood floors is pretty much going to make sound travel. I probably would have installed sound insulation panels on the ceilings. Nonetheless, space is brilliant. Check out more work by O+A, the architecture firm.
