Small Home, Big View

The Northface House located in Stavanger, Norway was designed in 2010 by Oslo-based design studio Element Arkitekter AS.

The existing property was built in 1969 as a twin to the neighbouring building. It no longer functioned well to the demands of 21st century living, neither in the room sizes nor in their solutions, and it generally needed bringing up-to-date to be come a contemporary Norwegian house.

“Element, together with the client, has come to a solution where mainly the bottom two stories are rehabilitated while the top storey is replaced with a lighter and more open construction which opens up towards a grand view of the fjord. This is a big change from the earlier situation where it was necessary to go down a level to see the view.

The top volume is three meters cantilevered over the rest of the volumes and is pulled away from the road to make room for a larger sun deck towards the south and to let more light into the contemporary Norwegian building. This deck is also thereby sheltered from the northern wind.

The architectural expression strengthens the qualities on the site and reflects its northern orientation. At the same time it respects the existing constructive principles.

I’m really liking the view. It’s funny that I was looking at a home recently that had a great view. The view wasn’t quite as exotic as this, but it had a really nice overlook across the horizon and landscape. I can’t move there now, but I really like the “resort-like” feeling. Check it out.

More Monday Music: Chrono Cross

What amazes me is the longevity of these songs. It’s nice to see the younger generation appreciate some of the classic stuff.

These kids did a fantastic cover of a song from Chrono Cross called “Time’s Scar”. Listen to the original version here.

Rumor: Bigger iPhone 6

Apple Reportedly Testing Bigger iPhone And iPad Screens, Starting Production On New 9.7″ iPad

Apple is reportedly testing out bigger iPhone and iPad screen designs, according to a new Wall Street Journal report. The Mac maker has been asking its supplier partners for prototype screens in sizes in excess of four inches, and also just shy of 12-inches, which would make the resulting devices both larger than the current 4-inch display-toting iPhone 5, or the 9.7-inch full-sized iPad.

Both the next iPad and the next iPhone will keep their current screen sizes, according to the WSJ and other rumor sources, so don’t expect these immediately. But the fact that Apple is playing with its options at least brings up the possibility that we could see big changes around the corner. –Techcrunch

About damn time. I was really starting to lose faith in the iPhone. While I love the retina screen, it’s just too small compared to the other phones out there. I’d like to get rid of the idea of having a phone and tablet. Yes, I’m in the market for a “Fahad

130MPH Lawn Mower

Forget robotic drones; Honda’s new lawnmower can turn a dreary task into an X Games sport. Honda aptly calls it the Mean Mower and claims it can reach speeds up to 130MPH and can go from 0 to 60MPH in just four seconds. For a lawnmower to reach those staggering numbers, the company’s UK arm reached out to Team Dynamics, its British Touring Car Championship partner. They redesigned one of the company’s machines, equipped it with a motorcycle engine to make it more powerful and replaced some of its parts with fiberglass to shave off some of its weight. Unfortunately, that doesn’t mean you can cut grass while speeding and drifting like Vin Diesel — its cutting cables only work if you slow it down to 15MPH. –Engadget.com

Holy crap, The Stig is on a 130mph lawnmower.

Designing Seating Arrangement for AddThis

addthis_seating_arrangement.JPG

It’s always fun sitting down with the team and figuring out seating arrangement. The illustration below shows how people interact with each other. Each color represents a different team. Dotted lines represent a semi connection between people.

The challenge of seating arrangement is getting the people to work around each other, as well as encourage collaboration with new people. The other secret challenge is making everyone happy… unfortunately, there are better seating positions than others. Already, I’m noticing my new seat is in a main traffic area. We may need to make some adjustments, but it shouldn’t be a big deal.
